In The Red
In The Red
A Documentary Film About Changing Lives

ABOUT THE FILM

IN THE RED is a feature documentary about transformation, about growing up poor, young and black in America. What does it mean to change one’s life? How can someone’s history be left behind? Three young men have the opportunity to do both. Their lifeline to a new life, a new history, is an 18-week program in Oakland, California to train them to become firefighters. The film – raw, intimate and revealing – follows their lives for nearly two years. Not everyone will succeed. But for those who make it through, their lives will be forever changed.

“My organization and I applaud you and your cohorts for the undertaking of this magnificent film. It is very real and true of what we as African American firefighters have faced for years in our communities to become firefighters.

Our attempt to tell our story has fallen on deaf ears. The struggles our young men and women face are all too real in America today. You see their story can be told thousands of time in every urban setting across this country.

We would like to have a conversation with you and your fellow artist in regards to this great work you have laid before us and the lives of those which came before and are living the struggle of an institutionalized system today.”

James F. Hill II, President of the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters (IABPFF), Washington D.C.

TAKE PART

spread_10.jpg

IN THE RED follows the lives of three young men training at a unique fire academy in Oakland, California, but most of the action takes place outside of the training tower – in their homes.

And it’s in their day to day lives that viewers see the obstacles the candidates face. Some will make it, some won’t.

IN THE RED is soon to be used as a teaching tool – a stellar example of how real lives are impacted by mentorship and training.

All proceeds of the film will go towards BAY EMT and the fire academy featured in the film.
